Choosing a Siberian Husky breeder, husky puppy buying guide.
A breeder’s perspective on finding not just a husky puppy but the one that’s truly yours!
Choosing a Siberian Husky puppy is not about scrolling through cute photos and picking the one with the bluest eyes. It's a decision that will shape the next 12-15 years of your life. And the difference between "I found my perfect dog" and "I wish someone had told me" usually comes down to how you approach the search.
I've been in the breed since 2016. I've raised litters, shown dogs across Europe and visited US the SH National Specialty show, and placed puppies in families in 6 countries. Here's the method I'd recommend to anyone looking for their Siberian Husky whether for a family companion or a future show star.
- Choosing a puppy is a time-consuming process.
- It starts with choosing a breed and researching it thoroughly. Study the breed standard. This will help ensure that the puppy you choose will grow up to look and act like the dog you saw in the photo. So research the breed standard, this is your rotection. - Find a good, responsible breeder and that doesn’t always mean a big, well-known kennel. It can just as well be a small, family-style kennel that raises their dogs with love and care. You can search in breed-specific groups on Facebook, through Instagram hashtags, or on Google. You can also contact your local kennel club for recommendations. Look internationally, some of the best breeders are in Eastern Europe. See how we work at Hakuna Vota
- Most reputable breeders have websites with their contact details and general information about their dogs, their breeding program, about themselves. If there's no website, no health tests, no transparency - that's a red flag. Our buying process: 7 steps from first contact to your puppy
- Reach out to the breeders you’ve selected. Wait for a litter from the pair you are interested in - yes, sometimes you need to get in line. But occasionally there are puppies available right away. But in case you need to wait for a litter that's a good sign for us. See our current breeding plans
- Be prepared for the fact that a high-quality puppy from a responsible breeder starts at around $800 and higher. The price depends on the bloodlines, the puppy’s quality, and the effort the breeder puts into raising it. A $200 puppy from a classifieds site is not a bargain it's a risk. What the price of a husky puppy actually includes
- Your dog will wait for you. The most important thing is to be clear about the kind of dog you want.
- There are different categories of puppy-quality:
- Some have excellent show potential. These are dogs of exceptional beauty and temperament. Breeders often prefer to place them in show homes. A show prospective puppy.
- Some are “breed class” -very promising for breeding programs because they meet the key criteria needed for further development of the breed. These puppies are typically offered to other breeders and for shows either. The highest quality and could be at a high rates.
- And then there are pet puppies -the majority of most litters. They are sweet and beautiful, well-bred, well-raised, but may not be intended for breeding or the show ring. The breeder might not want them to produce offspring, or the puppy may not have the ideal temperament for showing. But that doesn’t make them any less of a Husky, or somehow “bad” or unworthy. It simply means that, from the breeder’s point of view based on their experience, expertise, and judgment this particular puppy isn’t meant for shows or breeding. And that’s perfectly okay.
- Once you’ve chosen the breeding pair and joined the waitlist, the breeder will notify you when the litter is born. Then comes the wait - usually around 8 weeks - for the breeder to assess the puppies and offer you the one that best fits your expectations. We test each puppy's nervous system and temperament before making a recommendation. How we raise and socialize our puppies
- After that, the key is proper socialization. Ask for health tests and observe the puppy’s behavior. Make sure you’re comfortable with its reactions and ready to live with this little being and continue to raise it right. A good one will support you for the dog's entire life. Get in touch with us
Choosing a Siberian Husky is choosing a lifestyle. Take your time. Do your research. Find a breeder who knows their dogs inside and out, and who cares where every puppy ends up. Your perfect husky is out there. Make sure they come from the right hands.
